The Reisers created Learning Family in 1998, as a natural outgrowth of their activities learning at home. They had been sharing their learning adventures and ideas with friends and family, as well as from strangers met on the road, and received such interest and encouragement that they decided to this would be the best way to share the message with others.
We have always felt that learning and family were important, but we became serious about it all while we were living in Japan. Rob was working for Intuit, Inc. as President of Intuit K.K. (Japan), and Harrison and Amanda were attending ASIJ. Due to some unique educational requirements, they were unable to continue school at ASIJ. After months of research, hours of long-distance discussions with experts in the US, and exploring options with the help of a great company, we concluded that homeschooling was the best option for our kids, at least for the next few years.
Reluctantly, we began home-schooling, with tutors for Japanese and P.E., and a lot of time figuring out how to handle this new way of life. It became obvious that Rob would not be able to continue as President of Intuit K.K. and be headmaster of our newly formed school, math & science teacher, all while living in Tokyo. So, with much anxiety, and a lot of understanding from a good company, we moved back from Japan to focus our full time on our children's education.
Then a funny thing happened. We all had a great time learning together!
More to come...
