A discussion about the purpose of a logo followed. We learned that a logo is a symbol (Picture, words, etc.) that is easy to recognize and intended to help someone remember something, usually a company or organization. As the conversation progressed, we collectively decided that it would be great if our school could have a logo. At the time, we were calling ourselves the "Learning Team."
Then we talked about how a logo can express more about a company, maybe describe it or give meaning. So we talked about what was important in our home school. Amanda quickly remarked that we ask a lot of questions in our school In fact, they were required to come up with a question every day for school, and write a paragraph describing the answer. So, while thinking about questions, dad noticed that the "L" and "T" together look like someone's nose. "Maybe they're sniffing out an answer to a question? Dad drewe a question mark to make a head, and the logo was born. As we worked on our logo, we discussed copyrights, and how the images and messages had value to the companies that make them. It is not polite to use an image or message that someone else invented without their permission. We looked to see if anyone had used "Learning Team" before, and were disappointed to find that it was already in use. For a couple of days, we struggled to find a name that reflected what we were trying to do, until we recognized that "Learning Family" was even better! We liked the emphasis on Family, feeling that doing our school together as a family was half the fun. It was very simple to add the mouth, using an "F" instead of the "T". The design looked even more like a head, which we thought showed how important people are to everything we do. When we got home from that first trip, Harrison and Dad sat at the computer for a day and played with many designs with the head. Each part represents an important aspect of our Learning Family. The Question mark represents our search for knowledge. The exclamation point represents our excitement when we discover and answer. The eyes, nose and mouth represent our senses that we use as we seek answers. We incorporated the colors from our home library to represent the wide body of knowledge, and to show how varied and "colorful" life is. |
