Henry "Box" Brown (1815-18??)

Born in 1815 in Virginia, Henry Brown had dreams of freedom since he was a boy. In 1849, Henry had friends nail him into a box, and mailed him from Richmond Virginia to Philadelphia. With only a little bag of water, and a few crackers, he traveled in the box for 26 hours, part of the time upside down. After 34 years of slavery, Henry Brown was free. He spent the rest of his life as an outspoken abolitionist. Nothing is known of him after 1864, the year the Civil War ended.
