Keith Haring became famous in the 1980's New York art world by using
subway station advertising panels as canvas. He wanted his art to be easy
to relate to for everyone. His friendly and recognizable art work, such
as "Radiant Child", "Barking Dog", and "Flying
Saucer" quickly became popular, even in the leading museums and galleries,
by the mid 1980's. Haring gave a lot of his free time to paint for cities and schools because
he felt guilty for having so much money that he earned from his artwork. Keith Haring remained focused on public artworks throughout his life.
He was able to complete more than 50 murals and sculpture projects worldwide
between 1982-1989. Haring died of AIDS at the age of 31 in 1990. He earned
a lot of respect from audiences all around the world not only as an artist
but as a social activist. --Sara Utley
