| Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901)
Born on the Ohio River, Benjamin Harrison became our 23nd president at the age of 55. Despite his short height (5'6") giving him the nickname "Little Ben", he gave a contribution to our country by handling tariffs and signing economic bills, like the Anti-Trust Act. After Harrison's eduction at the Miami University in Ohio, he became a lawyer in Cinncinati and voted for Republicans. He moved to Indianapolis and married Caroline in 1855, after he was a Colonel in the Civil War. Later, he ran for governer of Indiana, but the Democrats defeated him. Thus, his political career began. When he won the presidential election of 1888, a lot of things happened. The Anti-Trust act was signed, making it so that if any company accumulates enough power to be considered a monopoly, it will be broken up to spread out the goods or services more fairly. Tariffs were being put on imported goods, so Harrison took off the tariff on sugar. Because of these tariffs, Congress had for the first time collected a billion-dollar surplus. To solve this problem, he gave the whole big wad out to Civil War veterans, some of which weren't even veterans! He lost the 1892 election. Then Benjamin Harrison, a successful politian, died in 1901. by Harrison |
