One
of the highlights was a live show where we learned how a car engine works.
We got demonstrations in some pretty astounding reactions and explosions
involving hydrogen, liquid nitrogen and alcohol. It was quite a "blast"!
CoSi is a very hands-on place, and staffed with lots of friendly people
that help you get involved. |

The
silly "professor", who was pretty careless with some steamy liquid
nitrogen, put a bit of it in a plastic pop bottle, screwed on the lid, then
put it in a bucket of warm water. Can you guess what happened next! |
 "I'm
making a bridge with a CoSi volunteer. We used metal tubes, nuts and bolts,
and plastic road pieces to build our bridge. When it was finished, it held
up my whole body! Bridges can be very strong." --Amanda |

Harrison
experimented with electronic circuits, with some help from a friendly
volunteer. "I used wires, resistors, switches and light bulbs
to make circuits. It was fun to figure out different ways of getting the
light bulb or LEDs to turn on. The variable resistor was like a dimmer
when I hooked it up to the light."

"We
used mirrors and prisms to make laser light go all over the place. There
was mist that the lasers' light reflected on and showed its path. When we
moved the mirrors and prisms, we could direct the path of the lasers in
different directions, and even split the light into many paths. It was really
cool!" --Harrison |

 In
the Gadget Cafe we got to take apart things or make things from all sorts
of parts. It really was like a cafe. First, you go to the counter to choose
your junk from a menu, then pick your tools from the utensil cart, and then
sit down and begin your project. Dad chose an old computer hard disk to
take apart. Harrison made a panpipe from straws, and Amanda made a cool
car from a mousetrap and other scraps. |
