Tom Sawyer's World
Hannibal, MO

Places Pictures Faces Tips Links Books

After a day in Hannibal, it's easy to confuse the names "Mark Twain" and "Tom Sawyer". They seem to be one in the same.

The quiet little town of Hannibal, Missouri is a tribute to the great author, remembered as a white-haired gentleman with a big mustache and a white suit. His love of the Mississippi River and his clever literary style made him one of the lengendary figures of America.

Mark Twain's boyhood home is filled with reminders that Tom Sawyer is patterned after Samuel Clemens (a.k.a. Mark Twain). His mother was the inspiration for Tom's Aunt Polly, and his siblings were the models for Tom's cousins. Becky Thatcher is strikingly similar to Mark Twain's friend, Laura Hawkins, on whom he had a crush as a boy.

We would have liked to walk through Mark Twain Cave, like Tom and Becky did, but we ran out of time. There really is a lot to see in this small town.

"We visited the house Mark Twain lived in when he was a boy. It's very much like the house where Tom lived in the book 'Tom Sawyer'. Norman Rockwell visited Hannibal when he was asked to paint pictures for the story. He used Mark Twain's house in some of the pictures."--Amanda

"We climbed the stairs to the top of Cardiff Hill, and we overlooked the Mississippi River. I think it wasn't worth it, but I think mom does. We saw Tom and Huck (look at the picture) at the base of the hill!"--Harrison

"At the new Mark Twain Museum I pretended to be a steamboat captain on the Mississippi River. Mark Twain left Hannibal at age 17 and trained to be a riverboat pilot. He got his license when he was 24."--Harrison
With a perfect whitewashed fence, it was hard to not pass up this photo opportunity. Without a copy of Rockwell's painting with us, we were surprised at the results.
