After staying at our cousins' house in Ohio for four weeks, we made a last-minute decision and took Sara and Addison with us for a week of Chicago adventures. Our first stop was the Earth Day celebration in Lincoln Park.

We spent the cool but sunny day learning about ways we can help our planet stay healthy for future generations. We listened to fun stories about kids who love nature, learned about earth-friendly ways of consuming all kinds of resources, and even participated in a butterfly migration.

All four kids came away with brochures, ideas and plans for helping to take care of our world.

Monarch Migration

"We joined lots of other kids and adults and put on monarch butterfly wings. Then we followed the leader butterfly and migrated to Mexico and back to America, walking all around the Earth Day booths. If butterflies were gone, that would mean that the earth isn't very healthy. They are an important part of nature."--Amanda

"Some ladies gave our family some cardboard butterfly wings and asked if we wanted to be in a short play and so we did. She told us to go down to the stage. When we got there there were some Mexican dancers that were supposed to wake up the butterflies. After that, we all migrated south to Mexico." --Addison

Earth Day Discussion

"They were talking about a whole bunch of stuff. ONE was don't pollute. When you need groceries, make one big trip instead of nine small trips, or just ride your bike. Another is to buy less packaged stuff so you can save some of the recourse that it was packaged in." --Addison

Alternate Transportation

We learned about different ways of getting around that are less harmful to the planet. Biking and walking are always good ideas if you don't have far to go, but alternatives to gasoline-powered automobiles are becoming more available and affordable. "This car can go 450 miles on a tank of gas. I think it is amazing that it can go so far and pollute little if any." --Addison

World Entertainment

We enjoyed entertainment from Indian musicians and Mexican dancers. Hundreds of different cultures share this planet. If we are to keep our planet healthy, it will take the cooperation of all countries and peoples.

Alternate Energy

"There are many types of alternative energy that don't require coal or oil that takes millions of years to produce. Wind energy, solar energy and water power are all renewable energy sources. As long as the sun shines, we will have energy. We are making plans to build an energy-efficient house that will use solar and wind power to reduce our use of the earth's resources."--Harrison

Yummy Vegetarian Food

"We all tried soy nut butter, and loved it, especially Sara. I ate a Not-Dog for lunch that had no meat in it. I thought it tasted better than a regular hot dog. I learned that it takes 25 times as much resources to make meat as it does to grow vegetarian food. Growing a day's worth of vegetarian food uses 300 gallons of water, while a meat-eating diet uses 4,000 gallons of water a day. When I learned about how animals are treated, I thought about being a vegetarian. I've been trying it for a week. I think that it's kind of hard learning what vegetarian food to eat and where to buy it, but it's a healthier way to eat."--Harrison

"I always thought that Earth Day only had to do with the environment, such as the plants and trees. But I never thought that it could affect the animals. I learned a lot of stuff that happens to farm animals, and it is too sad and cruel to even think about. Many people there were supporting and talking about how being a vegetarian is healthy for you and safe for the animals. I told my mom that I want to try being a vegetarian for a while. She thinks that's great! My whole family is going to try it. " -- Sara

Soil Discoveries

"I learned that topsoil is the most important layer of dirt and that plants can help keep if from washing away. Topsoil has most of the nutrients in it and is needed to grow food and other plants. Another way to protect the soil is to use fertilizers and insecticides that don't harm the environment."--Amanda
