Henry Ford's vision for his American history museum was an amazing undertaking. In his 81-acre village are not only buildings, but stories, inventions and the spirit of creative people that contributed to the unique place and lifestyle we call American.

Many of the sites have been painstakingly reconstructed. Ford insisted on excavating the original grounds, retrieving such treasures at Thomas Edison's mortar and pestle bowl, once thrown out the window in frustration. Ford even had train car loads of soil transported from the sites so that visitors could walk on the actual ground these legendary figures trod.

Included in the collection of historical structures are Edison's Invention Factory, Henry Ford's birthplace, Noah Webster's house, and the Wright Brothers' home and cycle shop. It's a great place for hands-on history!

The first Ford Motor Company

"I learned that before steering wheels were invented, cars had steering sticks. We visited Henry Ford's house too and I liked this quote of his: 'Mother was not a believer in fancy cakes for children. She gave us plain, wholesome food, not so sweet to the taste but better for the health, good bread and beef sandwiches.' He really liked his mom, but she died when he was only 13."--Amanda

Edison's Menlo Park "Invention Factory"

"In the 'electric room' Edison generated electricity with dynamos, an invention for which he was issued a patent. In his lab, he invented the electric light, the phonograph, an electric copier and many other things. The organ at the back of the room was a gift too big to fit in his house. He and the other inventors used it during their breaks. Edison often worked late and sometimes slept in his lab on a table."--Harrison

Cotswold Cottage

Greenfield Village has all kinds of buildings from many different eras. This cottage and the blacksmith shop next door (where we watched a talented craftsman at work) are from the 1600's.

Trip Tips

Don't cut yourself short on time. If you can, plan an entire day to take in all the great buildings and exhibits, and another one for the Ford Museum. Watch the weather, and use a clear day for Greenfield Village--it's a lot of walking outside. Pack a picnic lunch to eat at one of the many shady benches, and be sure to bring a camera.

Check the map/guide for a listing of craft demonstrations and workshops available on the day you visit. There is glass blowing, printing, pottery making, weaving, silk thread making and more.
