staff at the Alabama Visitor's Info desk at a rest area. We were
excited to take part in this historically important remembrance
of the Civil Rights Movement.

to participate in this centuries-old celebration while we were in
the south. Though New Orleans boasts the biggest party, we opted
for the smaller event held at the site of the oldest ongoing Mardi
Gras celebration, Mobile, begun in 1830.

Having
lived in Biloxi, Mississippi for four years as a small child, Susan
wanted to pay a visit since we were in the area. Thirty years is
a long time, and the few remembrances are long gone, replaced with
casinos and hotels. The only familiar landmark was the lighthouse
in the middle of the highway. It was a nostalgic pilgrimage, though,
that proved to be educational.
