Learning Family rained out at Canyon Campground

Tuesday, June 16, 1998

The weather kept us from doing much outside. The overnight low was 33.6, and the heater in our LV didn't work. We spent most of the day inside studying: doing vocabulary, math, working on our Jr. Ranger projects, etc.

We spent the cold time in the warm LV studying about Yellowstone with the Yellowstone CD-ROM by MECC that our Grandma lent to us. It is a great CD! We also worked on our Jr. Ranger projects.

We learned from the rangers that this area is Bear Country. There are more bear sightings around the Canyon area than any other in Yellowstone.

Finally, the weather cleared enough for a short bike ride, then it rained again.

coverAt night we watched a movie called "The Bear" which was about an orphaned grizzly. Amanda learned that bears can scare you, but sometimes they will not kill you. We learned that this is the bear's backyard, not ours. What if there was a bear in your backyard? Would you be happy if it ruined your garden? Since we are in the bear's backyard, we should not cut trees down, litter, or take things from their home.

Don't let the lack of a picture turn you off to this CD.
This is the CD that Harrison, Amanda and their cousing Brenden enjoyed on our trip. Pretend to be a park ranger, looking for wildlife and answering visitor's questions. There are a lot of pictures, sounds and facts to explore on this great CD.

Family Fun in Yellowstone National Park (Falcon Guide) by Robin Tawney
From Amazon - Written for those who love sight-seeing, this book offers information about some of the most spectacular scenery in the West. The wonders of these two national parks are introduced in 17 drives that cover all available roads with the parks and nine roads leading to them from Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. The Bear
The story of a bear cub that grows up without a mother. Told by the bear, almost without any words, you feel like a bear in the wilderness with this great movie. Amanda cried in the middle and had tears of joy at the end.
